Choosing a box style
The right box depends on what you sell, how it reaches the customer and how you want it to feel when it is opened. Most custom boxes fall into three families:
- Corrugated boxes such as mailer boxes, shipping boxes and double wall boxes. They are built to travel and protect products in the mail or in freight.
- Folding cartons such as tuck end, seal end, auto lock bottom, gable and pillow boxes. Made from paperboard, they ship flat and suit retail shelves and lighter products.
- Rigid boxes such as magnetic closure, two-piece, book style and drawer boxes. Made from thick, wrapped chipboard, they suit premium and gift packaging.
Questions to ask before you choose
- Will the box be shipped on its own? If yes, start with corrugated mailers or shipping boxes.
- Will it sit on a shelf? Folding cartons and display boxes are designed for retail.
- Is it a gift or premium item? Rigid and magnetic boxes give the strongest impression.
- How heavy is the product? Heavier items need stronger board or a locking base.
- How much storage do you have? Boxes that ship flat save space.
Materials and finishes
Each style can be made in a range of materials, from brown kraft and white SBS paperboard to corrugated board and wrapped chipboard. Finishes such as matte or soft-touch lamination, spot UV, foil stamping, embossing and window cutouts let you match the box to your brand. Inserts hold products in place and improve the unboxing.
