Custom Tuck End Boxes

Updated

Custom tuck end boxes are folding paperboard cartons with closing flaps that tuck into the top and bottom. Made to your exact size and printed edge to edge, they suit retail products such as cosmetics, supplements, candles, small electronics and food items that need shelf-ready packaging that ships flat and assembles by hand.

Custom Tuck End Boxes

What is a tuck end box?

A tuck end box is a folding carton made from a single printed sheet of paperboard. It ships flat, then folds into shape and closes with flaps that tuck into each end. There are two main versions:

  • Reverse tuck end: the top flap tucks from the back and the bottom flap from the front. It is the most common retail carton.
  • Straight tuck end: both flaps tuck from the same side, which gives an unbroken front panel and suits window cutouts.

When to choose a tuck end box

  • Your product sells on a retail shelf or in a display.
  • The product is light, such as a jar, bottle, tube or small device.
  • You want every side of the box printed with branding and product details.
  • You need packaging that stores flat until you pack it.

For heavier products, an auto lock bottom box adds strength at the base without changing the look.

Materials and finishes

Tuck end boxes are usually printed on SBS paperboard, a bleached board with a smooth white surface that holds fine detail. Kraft paperboard gives a natural, unbleached look. Finishes that suit this style include:

  • Matte, gloss or soft-touch lamination
  • Spot UV to highlight a logo or product name
  • Foil stamping, embossing or debossing
  • Window cutouts with a clear film
  • Paperboard inserts to hold bottles or jars upright

Design tips

  • Design the front panel first, as it faces the shopper.
  • Keep barcodes, ingredients and legal text on side or back panels.
  • Keep text away from folds and glue areas shown on the dieline.
  • Use the inside of the top flap for a short message or instructions.

FAQ

Custom Tuck End Boxes: common questions

What is the difference between reverse tuck end and straight tuck end?
On a reverse tuck end box the top and bottom flaps tuck in from opposite sides, front and back. On a straight tuck end box both flaps tuck in from the same side. Reverse tuck is the most common for retail cartons, while straight tuck keeps the front panel clean, which helps with windows and certain designs.
How strong are tuck end boxes?
Tuck end boxes are made from paperboard, so they are designed for light retail products rather than shipping on their own. They hold items like cosmetics, supplements and small accessories well. For heavier products, ask about an auto lock bottom, a thicker board or an outer shipping box.
Can tuck end boxes have a window?
Yes. A die-cut window with a clear film lets shoppers see the product without opening the box. Windows work well for food, candles, toys and cosmetics. Tell us the size and position you want, and we show it on the digital proof before print.
Do tuck end boxes come assembled?
No. Tuck end boxes are delivered flat, which saves space in shipping and storage. Each one folds into shape by hand in a few seconds, with no glue or tape needed at the ends. The side seam is already glued during production.
Can I add an insert to a tuck end box?
Yes. Paperboard inserts can hold bottles, jars, droppers or several small items in place so they do not move around. Describe your product and how many pieces go in each box, and our team will suggest an insert design with your quote.
