Custom Gable Boxes

Updated

Custom gable boxes are folding paperboard boxes with a peaked top that forms a built-in carry handle. Made to your exact size and printed with your brand, they suit bakeries, restaurants, gift shops, party planners and retailers who want packaging customers can carry easily without a separate bag.

Custom Gable Boxes

What is a gable box?

A gable box is a folding carton whose top panels rise to a peak, like the roof of a house, and lock together to form a handle. The base is usually an auto lock or tuck bottom, so the box stands steady when filled. It ships flat and folds into shape by hand. Because the handle is part of the box, there is nothing extra to buy, attach or throw away, and the peaked top keeps the contents covered on the way home.

When to choose a gable box

  • Customers carry the product out of a store, bakery or event.
  • You pack treats, small gifts, party favors or sample sets.
  • You want a gift-ready box that does not need a bag.
  • You want a shape that stands out on a counter or shelf.

For heavier items, ask about a sturdier board, or consider a handle box with a reinforced handle.

Materials and finishes

Gable boxes are usually made from paperboard. SBS gives a bright white surface for full-color designs; kraft gives a warm, unbleached look that suits bakeries and natural brands. Common options include:

  • Full-color print or simple one-color logos
  • Matte or gloss coatings
  • Window cutouts so customers can see the contents
  • Grease-resistant coatings or liners for baked goods (check food-contact needs for your product)

Design tips

  • The handle panels are seen first when the box is carried, so put your logo there.
  • Use a window to show colorful food or products.
  • Keep text away from the handle cutout and fold lines.
  • Seasonal versions of the same box are an easy way to mark holidays.

FAQ

Custom Gable Boxes: common questions

What are gable boxes used for?
Gable boxes are used for bakery items, takeout treats, party favors, small gifts, sample kits and promotional handouts. The built-in handle makes them easy to carry, so they work well wherever a customer leaves a store or event with the product in hand.
Can gable boxes hold food?
Gable boxes are popular for baked goods and sweets. For greasy or moist foods, a grease-resistant coating or inner liner helps. Food-contact requirements depend on your product, so check the rules that apply to you and tell us whether food will touch the board directly.
Do gable boxes come flat?
Yes. Gable boxes ship flat to save space and fold into shape by hand. The bottom locks or tucks into place, and the top panels close together to form the handle. Assembly takes a few seconds per box once you have done a few.
Can I add a window to a gable box?
Yes. A die-cut window, with or without clear film, lets customers see what is inside. It is a common choice for cookies, cupcakes, soaps and candles. Tell us the window size and position you want, and we show it on your digital proof before print.
How strong is the handle on a gable box?
The handle is formed from the same paperboard as the box, so it is designed for light to medium loads such as pastries or small gifts. For heavier contents, ask about a thicker board or a different handle style when you request a quote.
