What is a collapsible box?

A collapsible box, also called a foldable rigid box, is made from the same wrapped chipboard as a standard rigid box, but the walls are hinged so the box lies flat. To set it up, you raise the sides and lock them in place, usually with a fold-in panel, adhesive strip or magnets. The finished box has the look and feel of a rigid gift box.

When to choose a collapsible box

• You want rigid box quality but have limited storage space.
• Freight cost matters: flat boxes take up far less room in a shipment.
• You pack in batches and can assemble boxes as you go.
• You send gifts or kits that customers will keep and reuse.

If you pack only small runs and storage is not a concern, a standard rigid box or magnetic closure box skips the setup step.

Materials and finishes

Collapsible boxes use rigid chipboard wrapped in printed or specialty paper. The wrap can be full-color art paper, colored or textured stock, or kraft. Common finishes include:

• Soft-touch or matte lamination
• Foil stamping and embossing on the lid
• Magnetic or ribbon closures
• Paperboard or foam inserts
• Printed inside surfaces

Design tips

• Keep artwork clear of the hinge lines so it does not crack when the box folds.
• Include simple setup instructions for your packing team, or print them inside.
• Test-fit your product and insert on the digital proof dimensions before ordering.
• Ship the finished box inside an outer carton to protect the wrap.
