Custom Rigid Boxes

Updated

Custom rigid boxes, also called setup boxes, are made from thick chipboard wrapped in printed or specialty paper and delivered already assembled. Made to your exact size, they suit luxury cosmetics, jewelry, electronics, spirits, gift sets and premium brands that want packaging that feels solid and is kept long after purchase.

Rigid box styles

15 options. Every product is made to your size with your artwork.

What is a rigid box?

A rigid box is built from dense chipboard that does not fold flat. The board is cut, formed into shape and then wrapped in paper that carries your print or color. Because the walls are thick and stiff, rigid boxes feel heavier and more substantial than folding cartons, which is why they are the standard for high-end retail and gift packaging.

Common rigid box styles

  • Lid and base: a separate lid lifts off a base.
  • Magnetic closure: a hinged lid closes with hidden magnets.
  • Drawer: a tray slides out of a sleeve.
  • Book style: opens from the side like a book cover.
  • Collapsible: a rigid box that folds flat for shipping and storage.

When to choose a rigid box

  • Your product is premium and the box should reflect that.
  • You want customers to keep and reuse the box.
  • You need strong walls for glass, electronics or heavy items.
  • You create launch kits, corporate gifts or limited editions.

Materials and finishes

The core is chipboard, a dense board made from recycled paper fibers. The wrap can be printed art paper, colored or textured specialty paper, or kraft paper. Popular finishes include soft-touch lamination, foil stamping, embossing and debossing, spot UV, and inserts made from foam, paperboard or molded pulp.

Design tips

  • Let finishes do the work: a foil or embossed logo on a solid wrap often looks the most refined.
  • Choose the insert at the same time as the box, so the product sits exactly right.
  • Rigid boxes ship assembled and take up space, so plan storage, or ask about a collapsible version.
  • Ship rigid boxes inside an outer shipping box to keep the wrap clean.

FAQ

Custom Rigid Boxes: common questions

What is the difference between a rigid box and a folding carton?
A folding carton is made from thin paperboard, ships flat and is folded into shape by hand. A rigid box is made from thick chipboard wrapped in paper, arrives already assembled and does not fold. Rigid boxes feel more solid and premium, while folding cartons are lighter and save storage space.
Why are rigid boxes used for luxury products?
Rigid boxes have thick, stiff walls, a heavier feel and clean, sharp edges, and they take premium finishes like foil and embossing well. Customers often keep them, so the brand stays in view long after purchase. That combination is why high-end brands choose them.
Do rigid boxes ship flat?
Standard rigid boxes do not; they arrive assembled, so they take up more space in freight and storage. If space is a concern, a collapsible rigid box folds flat for shipping and is set up by hand when you pack it, while keeping the rigid look and feel.
Can rigid boxes be shipped by mail on their own?
Rigid boxes are strong, but the paper wrap can scuff or tear in transit. Most brands place them inside a corrugated shipping box or mailer so the presentation box arrives clean. Tell us how you ship and we can suggest an outer box size.
Are rigid boxes recyclable?
The chipboard and paper wrap are paper-based and are accepted in many recycling programs. Plastic laminations, foam inserts and magnets can complicate recycling, and rules vary by area. If recyclability matters, ask about paper-based inserts and uncoated wraps.
