Custom Auto Lock Bottom Boxes

Updated

Custom auto lock bottom boxes, also called crash lock or snap lock boxes, are folding cartons with a pre-glued base that locks into place when the box is opened. Made to your exact size and printed with your brand, they suit heavier retail products such as bottles, jars, candles and kits that need a secure bottom.

Custom Auto Lock Bottom Boxes

What is an auto lock bottom box?

An auto lock bottom box is a folding carton whose bottom panels are glued during production so that they lock together automatically when the flat box is squeezed open. The top usually closes with a tuck flap. Because the base forms in one motion and holds firm, these boxes are fast to pack and carry more weight than a standard tuck end carton.

When to choose an auto lock bottom box

  • Your product is heavier than a typical cosmetic or accessory, such as a glass jar, bottle or candle.
  • You pack many boxes by hand and want to save time on assembly.
  • You want a retail carton that will not open at the bottom when lifted.
  • You need a clean front panel for shelf display.

For light items that do not need extra support, a tuck end box is simpler and usually lower in cost.

Materials and finishes

Most auto lock bottom boxes are made from SBS paperboard for bright print or kraft paperboard for a natural, unbleached look. For heavier contents, a thicker board or E-flute corrugated adds rigidity. Finishes include:

  • Matte, gloss or soft-touch lamination
  • Spot UV, foil stamping, embossing and debossing
  • Window cutouts with clear film
  • Inserts or dividers to separate bottles and jars

Design tips

  • The base panels overlap, so keep important text off the bottom or limit it to a single panel.
  • Place barcodes on a side panel where scanners can reach them easily.
  • Use the top tuck flap inside for a thank-you line or usage tip.
  • Tell us the product weight so the board choice matches the load.

FAQ

Custom Auto Lock Bottom Boxes: common questions

What is the difference between an auto lock bottom and a 1-2-3 bottom?
An auto lock bottom is pre-glued, so the base locks itself when you open the flat box. A 1-2-3 bottom, also called a lock bottom or snap lock, is not pre-glued: you fold the bottom flaps in sequence by hand. Auto lock is faster to assemble; a 1-2-3 bottom can be simpler to produce.
Are auto lock bottom boxes the same as crash lock boxes?
Yes. Auto lock bottom, crash lock and crash bottom are names used for the same style: a folding carton with a pre-glued base that pops into shape and locks when opened. You may see any of these names on quotes and spec sheets.
How much weight can an auto lock bottom box hold?
It depends on the board type, thickness and box size, so there is no single figure. Auto lock bottoms are designed for heavier retail products than tuck end boxes. Tell us your product weight with your quote request and we will suggest a suitable board.
Do auto lock bottom boxes ship flat?
Yes. They are delivered flat with the base and side seam already glued. To assemble, you squeeze the flat box open and the bottom locks into place, then you pack the product and close the top flap. This keeps storage compact until you need the boxes.
Can I print on the bottom of an auto lock box?
Yes, but the bottom is made of overlapping panels, so artwork there is partly hidden or split. It is best to keep important text, barcodes and logos on the sides, front and back. We show exactly where panels fall on the dieline and digital proof.
