Custom Two-Piece Boxes

Updated

Custom two-piece boxes have a separate lid that fits over a base, in either rigid chipboard or folding board, made to your exact size and printed with your brand. They suit apparel, jewelry, gift sets, candles, chocolates and stationery brands that want a classic lift-off reveal for retail or gifting.

Custom Two-Piece Boxes

What is a two-piece box?

A two-piece box, sometimes called a lid and base box or telescope box, has a base that holds the product and a lid that slides down over it. The lid can cover the base fully, for a full telescope design, or partly, showing a band of the base below it. Two-piece boxes come in two main builds:

  • Rigid: thick chipboard wrapped in printed or specialty paper. It arrives assembled and feels solid and premium.
  • Folding: paperboard or corrugated that ships flat and is assembled by hand, which saves storage space.

When to choose a two-piece box

  • You sell gifts, apparel, accessories, candles or confectionery.
  • You want a lift-off opening that feels like unwrapping a present.
  • You want a box customers will keep and reuse.
  • You need a shallow box for folded clothing or flat items.

Materials and finishes

Rigid versions use chipboard wrapped in paper, which can be printed in full color or chosen as a textured, colored or kraft stock. Folding versions use SBS paperboard, kraft or E-flute corrugated. Popular finishes include:

  • Soft-touch or matte lamination
  • Foil stamping, embossing and debossing on the lid
  • Spot UV accents
  • Foam, paperboard or molded inserts
  • Ribbon pulls or thumb cutouts to lift the lid

Design tips

  • Keep the lid design simple; a single foil logo on a solid color often looks the most premium.
  • Print the inside of the base or add tissue for a stronger reveal.
  • Use a contrasting base color if the lid shows part of the base.
  • Ask for a thumb cutout if the lid fits closely, so it is easy to lift.

FAQ

Custom Two-Piece Boxes: common questions

What is a telescope box?
A telescope box is a two-piece box where the lid slides down over the base, like the sections of a telescope. In a full telescope design the lid covers the whole base; in a partial design it covers only the top part, leaving a band of the base visible.
Are two-piece boxes rigid?
They can be either. Rigid two-piece boxes use thick chipboard wrapped in paper and arrive assembled. Folding two-piece boxes use paperboard or corrugated board, ship flat and fold into shape by hand. Rigid feels more premium; folding saves storage and freight space.
Can I add an insert to a two-piece box?
Yes. Inserts made from foam, paperboard or molded pulp hold products in place and present them neatly when the lid comes off. Tell us what goes in the box and how many pieces, and we will suggest an insert with your quote.
Can you print the inside of a two-piece box?
Yes. The inside of the lid and base can be printed with a color, pattern or message. On rigid boxes this is done on the paper that lines the inside. Inside print adds to the reveal when the customer lifts the lid.
What is the difference between a two-piece box and a magnetic closure box?
A two-piece box has a lid that lifts completely off the base. A magnetic closure box has a hinged lid attached to the base that closes with hidden magnets, like a book. Both are popular for premium gifts; the right one depends on how you want the box to open.
