Mylar Bags vs Paper Bags: Which Packaging Fits Your Product?

Updated · Vorex Packaging

Choose Mylar bags when the product needs protection from moisture, oxygen and light, such as coffee, snacks, supplements or cannabis, and when you need heat sealing or child-resistant zippers. Choose paper bags for carrying purchases, gifts and dry goods, where a natural look and easy recycling matter more than a strong barrier.

Two different jobs

Although both are called bags, they solve different problems. Mylar bags are pouches made from laminated films, usually polyester with a metallized or foil barrier and a sealant layer. They keep products fresh and protected. Paper bags are made from kraft or white paper and are mainly used to carry, present or wrap products.

Protection and freshness

Mylar bags block light and slow the passage of moisture and oxygen, which helps preserve coffee, snacks, dried foods and supplements. They can be heat sealed for tamper evidence and include resealable or child-resistant zippers. Paper bags let air and moisture through unless they have a liner or coating, so they are better for short-term carrying or for dry products already sealed in another layer.

Sustainability and claims

Plain paper bags are widely recyclable and many shoppers see them as a lower-impact choice. Multi-layer Mylar laminates are generally hard to recycle in curbside programs. If you print environmental claims on either, check current FTC Green Guides and Competition Bureau guidance and local recycling rules.

Branding

Both can be fully printed. Mylar offers glossy, matte and holographic finishes and clear windows. Paper bags suit natural, craft and retail brands, and they carry a logo well on the street.

Choose Mylar bags if...

  • Your product must stay fresh, dry or protected from light.
  • You need heat sealing, zippers or child-resistant closures.
  • The bag is the product's primary package on the shelf.

Choose paper bags if...

  • Customers carry purchases, gifts or takeout.
  • Recyclability and a natural look are priorities.
  • The product is already sealed or does not need a barrier.

Questions

Are Mylar bags food safe?
Many Mylar bags are made with food-contact grade inner layers, but this depends on the specific material. Ask your supplier for documentation for the film you choose and check current food packaging rules for your product.
Can paper bags keep food fresh?
Plain paper bags offer little protection from air and moisture, so they suit short-term carrying. Lined or coated paper bags give more protection, and a sealed inner pouch is the common route for long shelf life.
Do I need child-resistant Mylar bags?
It depends on the product and where you sell it. Cannabis and some other regulated products may require child-resistant packaging in US states and in Canada. Check current federal, state and provincial rules for your product.
