Pillow Box vs Gable Box: Which Small Carry Box Fits Best?
Updated · Vorex Packaging
Choose a pillow box for small, flat or lightweight items such as jewelry, gift cards, soap and favors, where a compact, elegant shape matters. Choose a gable box when the product is bulkier or needs to be carried by hand, such as baked goods, takeout or gift kits, because it has a built-in handle and more space.
| Pillow box | Gable box | |
|---|---|---|
| Shape | Flat with curved, pinched ends | Box base with a peaked top and handle |
| Capacity | Small, slim items | Larger, taller items |

| Assembly | Fold curved ends, no glue | Fold and lock; often auto-lock base |
| Strength | Light items only | Light to moderate loads |
| Typical uses | Jewelry, gift cards, soap, favors | Bakery, takeout, party favors, gift kits |
Shape and function
A pillow box is a slim box with curved ends that fold inward, creating a soft, pillow-like outline. It is compact and elegant, making it a favorite for small gifts and retail add-ons. A gable box has a rectangular base and two top panels that rise to a peak with a handle cut-out, like the roof of a house.
Capacity and protection
Pillow boxes hold thin or small products and give limited protection, so they are best for light items that are not easily crushed. Gable boxes are taller and roomier, and with an auto-lock base they carry heavier contents such as pastries or a set of products.
Customer experience
A pillow box feels like a wrapped gift and often goes inside a shopping bag or mailer. A gable box is designed to be carried as is, so it works as its own bag at events, bakeries and pop-up stores.
Materials and printing
Both styles come in kraft for a natural look, white paperboard for full color, and can take foil, windows and finishes. Pillow boxes can also be made from clear PET to show the product.
