Spot UV vs Foil Stamping: Which Premium Finish to Choose?
Updated · Vorex Packaging
Choose spot UV for a subtle, glossy highlight that makes a logo or pattern shine against a matte background without adding color. Choose foil stamping when you want a bold metallic or holographic effect, such as gold or silver, that reads as luxury from across a room. They can also be combined on one box.
| Spot UV | Foil stamping | |
|---|---|---|
| What it is | Clear glossy coating on selected areas | Metallic or colored foil pressed on with a heated die |
| Look | Glossy, subtle, tone-on-tone | Reflective, metallic, high contrast |
| Colors | Clear only, shows the print beneath | Gold, silver, copper, holographic, colors |
| Best surface | Matte or soft-touch laminated board | Coated, laminated, kraft and rigid wraps |
| Tooling | Separate artwork layer; screen or digital | Requires a custom stamping die |
| Best for | Patterns, logos, textured accents | Logos, borders, names, luxury accents |
How each finish works
Spot UV is a clear coating applied only to chosen areas and cured instantly with ultraviolet light. It adds shine and a slight raised feel over the printed design. Foil stamping uses heat and pressure to transfer a thin foil from a carrier film onto the board, creating a reflective metallic or colored area.
Visual effect
Spot UV is understated. It shows best against matte or soft-touch lamination, where the gloss contrast catches the light as the box is turned. Foil is immediately visible and adds color, which makes it the classic choice for luxury logos, seasonal packaging and gift boxes.
Materials
Spot UV needs a smooth surface to shine, so it is less effective on uncoated or kraft board. Foil works on many surfaces, including kraft, where gold or silver against brown gives a popular natural-luxury look.
Design tips
- Supply each finish as its own vector layer or spot color.
- Avoid very fine lines and tiny text for both finishes.
- Align finish areas exactly with the printed artwork.
- Check placement on the digital proof before production.
Choose spot UV if...
- You want a refined, subtle accent rather than a new color.
- Your box has a matte or soft-touch finish.
- You want a pattern that appears only in certain light.
Choose foil stamping if...
- You want metallic gold, silver or holographic details.
- Your brand needs a clear luxury signal on the shelf.
- Your box is kraft and you still want a premium accent.
Many premium boxes use both: foil on the logo and spot UV on a background pattern.
