What kraft packaging is

Kraft paper and board are made with the kraft pulping process and left unbleached, so the surface stays a natural brown. It is used as a folding carton board, as the outer liner of corrugated board and as bag paper. The brown base is part of the look: ink sits on top of it rather than on a white sheet.

When to choose kraft

Choose kraft when you want packaging that reads as natural, handmade or understated. It suits candles, soap, coffee, baked goods, apparel and gift brands that lean on a simple, honest style. It is also a practical choice for shipping cartons and mailers where the box gets handled a lot and a white surface would show scuffs.

• Kraft paperboard for retail cartons such as tuck end and sleeve boxes.
• Kraft corrugated for mailer and shipping boxes that need more strength.
• Kraft paper for shopping bags, pouches and wrap.

Printing on kraft

Because the base is brown, colors print darker and less bright than on white board. Black, white and deep colors work best. A one or two color logo often looks sharper than a full-color photo. If you need bright color, ask about a white base layer under the artwork, or consider white board with a kraft-look design instead.

Finishes that suit kraft

Hot foil stamping, embossing and debossing work well on kraft and keep the natural feel. Heavy gloss lamination can hide the texture, so many brands keep kraft uncoated or use a light matte finish.

Design tips

• Use bold type and high-contrast colors so text stays readable on brown.
• Leave some of the kraft showing; it is part of the brand look.
• Ask for a printed sample if exact color matters.
