Custom Rigid Boxes (Chipboard)
Updated
Rigid boxes are made from thick, stiff chipboard wrapped in printed or specialty paper. They do not fold flat like folding cartons, which gives them a solid, premium feel. Vorex makes custom rigid boxes to your exact size for brands in the USA and Canada selling gifts, cosmetics, jewelry, electronics and luxury goods.

A rigid box starts with chipboard, a dense board made from recycled paper fibers. The board is cut, formed into a box shape and then wrapped with a printed paper, specialty paper or fabric-like wrap. Because the walls are thick and set in place, the box keeps its shape and feels heavy in the hand. This is the build behind many phone boxes, watch boxes, perfume boxes and gift sets.
When to choose rigid boxes
Choose rigid packaging when presentation matters more than flat storage. It suits high-value products, gift sets, influencer kits and items the customer will keep the box for. Rigid boxes usually ship assembled, so they take more space in storage and freight than folding cartons. Collapsible rigid boxes are an option when space is a concern.
Common rigid styles
- Two-piece boxes with a separate lid and base.
- Magnetic closure boxes with a hinged lid that snaps shut.
- Drawer or sleeve boxes that slide open.
- Book style boxes that open like a cover.
Wraps, finishes and inserts
The wrap carries the print. It can be a printed art paper, a textured specialty paper or a solid colored stock. Matte or soft-touch lamination, spot UV, foil stamping, embossing and debossing are all common. Inserts made of paperboard, foam or molded pulp hold the product in place and improve the unboxing.
Design tips
- Plan the insert with the box, not after it.
- Use foil or emboss on one focal element rather than everywhere.
- Dark wraps show scuffs; a soft-touch or matte lamination helps.
- Think about the outer shipping carton, since rigid boxes are not shipping boxes.
