What Is Aqueous coating?
Updated · Vorex Packaging
Aqueous coating is a clear, water-based coating applied over printed packaging to protect the ink from scuffs, fingerprints and moisture. It dries quickly, comes in gloss, matte and satin finishes, and is a common, economical way to protect folding cartons without adding a plastic laminate film.
Aqueous coating is usually applied in-line on an offset press, right after the inks, and dries with heat and air. It forms a thin protective layer over the whole sheet or selected areas.
Benefits
- Protects printed colors from rubbing during packing and shipping.
- Available in gloss, satin and matte looks.
- Dries fast, which keeps production moving.
- Generally considered easier for paper recycling than plastic film laminates.
Compared with other finishes
Aqueous coating gives less protection and a less dramatic look than lamination, which is a bonded film. It is smoother and more even than traditional oil-based varnish. UV coating is harder and glossier but needs UV curing. For many everyday retail cartons, aqueous coating is enough. If your box will face heavy handling or needs a premium feel, ask about matte or soft-touch lamination, or spot UV on top.
