What Is Auto-lock bottom?
Updated · Vorex Packaging
An auto-lock bottom is a pre-glued carton base that snaps into a locked position when the flat box is squared open. Also called a crash-lock or snap-lock bottom, it forms a strong, secure floor in one motion, so it suits heavier products and speeds up hand packing compared with tuck or 1-2-3 bottoms.
The bottom flaps of an auto-lock carton are partly glued during manufacturing. The box still ships flat, but when you push the sides open, the flaps fold into one another and lock automatically.
Why choose it
- Holds heavier items such as bottles, jars and candles more securely than a tuck bottom.
- Fast to assemble, which saves time when packing by hand.
- Usually paired with a tuck top so the box can still be opened easily.
Things to consider
The extra gluing step and more complex dieline can make auto-lock boxes cost a little more than simple tuck end cartons. The bottom panel is less suited to printed artwork, since it is formed from several overlapping flaps. For very heavy or shipped items, a corrugated box may still be the better choice. Ask your supplier whether an auto-lock bottom suits your product's weight and size.
