What Is Embossing?

Updated · Vorex Packaging

Embossing is a finishing technique that presses a design up from the back of the board so it stands out as a raised area on the surface of the box. It adds texture and depth to logos, patterns or names, and it can be blind (no ink or foil) or registered with printing or foil.

Embossing uses a matched pair of dies, one raised and one recessed. The board is squeezed between them, permanently lifting the design above the surrounding surface.

Types of embossing

  • Blind embossing: the raised area has no ink or foil, for a subtle, tone-on-tone look.
  • Registered embossing: the raised area lines up with printed artwork.
  • Foil embossing: foil and embossing are combined for a raised metallic logo.

When it works best

Embossing is most effective on thicker paperboard and on paper wraps for rigid boxes, where the material can stretch without cracking. Simple, bold shapes read better than fine detail. Because the design shows through on the inside of a single-layer carton, think about how the reverse looks if the inside will be visible. For corrugated boxes, embossing is usually limited, so a printed or foiled logo is the more common choice.

Questions

What is the difference between embossing and debossing?
Embossing raises the design above the surface, while debossing presses it down into the surface. Both add texture without needing ink, and both can be combined with foil or printing.
Can you emboss corrugated mailer boxes?
Corrugated board does not hold a crisp embossed shape well because of its fluted middle layer. Embossing is more common on paperboard cartons and rigid box wraps. For mailers, foil or printed logos are typical alternatives.
