What Is Gable box?
Updated · Vorex Packaging
A gable box is a carry box with a pitched top shaped like the gable of a house and an integrated handle at the peak. It folds from a single sheet of paperboard or kraft, often with an auto-lock base, and is used for bakery items, takeout, gifts, party favors and retail carry-out packaging.
The two top panels of a gable box rise to meet at a central handle, which usually has a die-cut hand hold. The shape makes the box easy to carry and gives a friendly, recognizable look on a counter or shelf.
Common uses
- Bakery treats, cookies and cupcakes.
- Takeout meals and snack boxes.
- Party favors, gift sets and promotional kits.
- Small retail purchases that customers carry out by hand.
Design and material tips
Gable boxes are usually made from paperboard or kraft board, and an auto-lock bottom adds strength for heavier contents. Every panel can be printed, and windows can be added to show the product. For food, ask about food-safe coatings or liners where the product touches the board. Gable boxes are a carry-out style rather than a shipping box, so place them in an outer carton if they will be mailed.
