What Is Gusset?
Updated · Vorex Packaging
A gusset is a folded panel built into the side or bottom of a bag or pouch that expands when the bag is filled, adding volume and letting it stand or sit squarely. Bottom gussets turn flat pouches into stand-up bags, and side gussets give paper bags and coffee bags their box-like shape.
A gusset is folded inward when the bag is empty, so it stores flat. When the product is added, the gusset opens out, creating depth.
Common gusset types
- Bottom gusset: forms the base of stand-up pouches, including many Mylar bags.
- Side gusset: expands at the sides, as in coffee bags and many paper bags.
- Quad seal or flat bottom: sealed corners or a flat base for a box-like pouch.
Why it matters
The gusset affects how much the bag holds, how it stands on a shelf and how much printable area shows on the front. When you request bags, give the width, height and gusset depth, and mention the product weight or volume to be filled so the supplier can confirm the size will work. A filled sample is the surest way to check fit.
