What Is Mylar?
Updated · Vorex Packaging
Mylar is a common name for BoPET, a strong polyester film, and in packaging it usually refers to flexible pouches made from layers of polyester film, often with metallized or aluminum foil layers. Mylar bags block light, moisture and oxygen well, so they are used for coffee, snacks, supplements and cannabis products.
Mylar is a trademark that has become a general word for polyester film. Packaging called Mylar bags is usually a laminate of several layers, such as printed PET, a metallized or foil barrier, and an inner sealant layer that can be heat sealed.
Why brands use Mylar bags
- Strong barrier against light, moisture and air, which helps protect freshness.
- Heat-sealable tops and optional zip closures for resealing.
- Full-color printing, holographic and matte finishes, and clear windows.
- Stand-up pouches with a bottom gusset that sit on shelves.
Things to consider
Multi-layer films are generally hard to recycle in curbside programs, so avoid recycling claims unless you can back them up with current local rules. For food, ask about food-contact materials. Cannabis and some other products may need child-resistant closures and specific labelling, which vary by state and province, so check current rules for your product and market.
