What Is Rigid box?
Updated · Vorex Packaging
A rigid box is a sturdy, non-folding box made from thick chipboard wrapped in printed paper or another covering. Also called a setup box, it keeps its shape and does not collapse, so it is used for premium products such as jewelry, electronics, cosmetics and gift sets where the box is part of the experience.
Rigid boxes are built from dense chipboard that is cut, formed into a box shape and covered with a printed or specialty wrap. The wrap carries the design and finishes, while the board gives the box its weight and stiffness.
Common rigid styles
- Two-piece (lid and base): a lid that lifts off a separate base.
- Magnetic closure: a hinged lid held shut with hidden magnets.
- Drawer (tray and sleeve): a tray that slides out of an outer sleeve.
- Collapsible: a rigid box that folds flat for storage and shipping.
When to choose one
Choose a rigid box when perceived value matters more than packaging cost per unit, such as for luxury goods, launch kits or gifts. Rigid boxes usually ship assembled and take more storage space than folding cartons, unless you choose a collapsible style. Because the box is not built for the mail on its own, many brands place it inside a corrugated shipper.
