What Is Spot UV?
Updated · Vorex Packaging
Spot UV is a clear, glossy coating applied only to selected areas of a printed box and cured instantly with ultraviolet light. It makes logos, patterns or text shine against a matte background, adding contrast and a subtle raised feel without extra ink colors, and it is a popular finish for premium retail boxes.
Spot UV, also called spot gloss, is applied over the printed surface in a pattern defined by a separate artwork layer. Ultraviolet lamps harden the coating straight away, leaving a glossy, slightly thick area that catches the light.
Best uses
- Highlighting a logo, product name or icon on the front panel.
- Creating tone-on-tone patterns that appear when the box is tilted.
- Adding contrast on matte or soft-touch laminated boxes.
Artwork tips
Supply the spot UV area as a separate layer or spot color in solid 100 percent black, aligned exactly with the printed element, and label it clearly. Very thin lines and tiny text may not reproduce well. Spot UV looks most striking over a matte finish, and less noticeable on an already glossy box. It works best on smooth paperboard and rigid box wraps; on kraft and uncoated board the effect is weaker.
