Glossary

What Is Straight tuck end (STE)?

Updated · Vorex Packaging

A straight tuck end (STE) is a folding carton style in which both the top and bottom closures tuck in from the same side, usually hinged to the back panel. This leaves the front panel smooth and uninterrupted, which suits window boxes, premium cartons and designs where the front face must look clean.

With a straight tuck end, both tuck flaps are attached to the same panel and fold toward the front. When the box is closed, the front panel shows no flap edges at the top or bottom.

Advantages

  • A clean front face for logos, windows and product imagery.
  • A neat appearance when the box sits on display or in a gift set.
  • Easy to open and reclose for products used over time.

Things to watch

Straight tuck end blanks may nest less efficiently on a printed sheet than reverse tuck end blanks, which can use a little more material. Like other tuck ends, the closures can open under weight, so heavier items may suit an auto-lock bottom. Check the dieline so text on the closure flaps faces the right way when folded.

Questions

What is the difference between STE and RTE boxes?
In a straight tuck end (STE) box, both flaps tuck in from the same side. In a reverse tuck end (RTE) box, they tuck in from opposite sides. STE gives a cleaner front, while RTE is often more economical to produce.
When should I choose a straight tuck end box?
Choose it when the front panel needs to look clean, for example on window boxes, premium cosmetics or gift cartons. It is also a good option when the box will be displayed with the front facing out.
