What clear PET packaging is

PET (polyethylene terephthalate) is a clear plastic. In packaging, thin PET sheet is cut and scored so it folds into a box, much like a paperboard carton, or used as a clear window film in a paper box. It is the same family of plastic used for many drink bottles. Clear PET lets the customer see the exact product, color and quantity before they buy.

When to choose clear PET

Choose clear packaging when the product sells itself on sight: candy and baked treats, cosmetics and nail products, small toys and figures, jewelry and hair accessories, party favors and gift sets. It is also common as a lid on a paperboard base, or as a sleeve around a product.

Common builds

• Folding clear boxes in tuck end, cube or pillow shapes.
• Clear lids on a paperboard or rigid base.
• Clear cylinders with paper or plastic end caps.
• Window patches in paperboard boxes, where most of the box stays paper.

Printing and finishes

Logos and text can be printed directly on clear PET. White ink is often printed behind color so it stays bright on a clear surface. Many brands keep the print minimal so the product stays the focus. Hang tabs can be added for retail pegs.

Design tips

• Arrange the product neatly, since every part of it is visible.
• Use an insert or card backer to hold items in place and carry information.
• Clear plastic shows scratches, so plan an outer shipping carton.
• If you want mostly paper packaging, a paperboard box with a window may suit you better.

Recycling

PET is widely collected in bottle form, but acceptance of PET boxes and sheet varies by local program. Check local rules before printing any recycling claim.
