Custom Tin Boxes and Containers

Updated

Tin packaging is made from thin steel sheet coated with tin, formed into round, square or rectangular containers with lids. It is sturdy, reusable and can be printed with full designs. Vorex makes custom printed tins for brands in the USA and Canada selling tea, candy, candles, cosmetics, gifts and collectibles.

Custom Tin Boxes and Containers

What tin packaging is

Most packaging tins are made from tinplate: thin steel sheet coated with a layer of tin that helps resist rust. The sheet is printed flat, then formed into a container with a lid. Because the print goes on before forming, a tin can carry a full wraparound design. Tins are rigid, protect the contents from crushing and are often kept and reused by customers.

When to choose tins

Choose a tin when you want packaging that lasts: gift sets, tea and coffee, cookies and candy, mints, lip balm and salves, candles, tobacco accessories and collectibles. Tins suit holiday and limited editions, where the container itself becomes part of the gift.

Common tin styles

  • Round tins with slip or screw lids.
  • Rectangular and square tins for cookies, tea and gift sets.
  • Hinged tins for mints and small items.
  • Window tins with a clear panel in the lid.
  • Candle tins sized for poured candles.

Printing and finishes

Tins can be printed in full color, often over a white base, or left as plain metal with a printed label. Embossing on the lid adds raised detail. Matte, gloss and metallic effects are possible. If you need a lower first order, a plain tin with a custom printed label is a common starting point.

Design tips

  • Design the lid as the hero panel; it is what people see first.
  • Check the seam position on round tins and keep key text away from it.
  • If food goes directly in the tin, ask about an inner liner or food-contact coating and check the rules for your product.
  • Candle tins need to suit the heat of a burning candle; tell us if that is the use.

FAQ

Custom Tin Boxes and Containers: common questions

What are tin boxes made of?
Most tin boxes are made of tinplate, which is thin steel sheet coated with a layer of tin. The tin coating helps the steel resist rust. Some containers sold as tins are made of aluminum instead, which is lighter. Tell us your product and we suggest a suitable option.
Can tins be printed with my own design?
Yes. Tins can be printed in full color across the lid and body, with the design printed on flat sheet before the tin is formed. Embossing on the lid adds raised detail. A plain tin with a printed label is another option that suits smaller or trial runs.
Are tins safe for food?
Many tins are used for food such as cookies, candy and tea. Whether a tin suits direct food contact depends on its inner coating or liner. If food touches the tin directly, tell us when you request pricing and check the food-contact rules that apply to your product.
Are metal tins recyclable?
Steel and aluminum containers are widely accepted by recycling programs in the USA and Canada, and many customers reuse tins for storage. Acceptance can vary locally, so check current rules before printing a recycling claim on the tin.
Can I use custom tins for candles?
Yes. Candle tins are a common style and come in round and rectangular shapes, sometimes with lids. Tell us the candle size and fill so the tin suits the use. Your candle maker should also check the tin works with their wax and wick choice.
