What Is Recyclable vs compostable packaging?
Updated · Vorex Packaging
Recyclable vs compostable packaging is the difference between materials that can be collected and made into new materials, and materials that break down into compost under the right conditions. Paper and corrugated boxes are widely recyclable, while compostable packaging often needs industrial composting facilities, which are not available everywhere.
Both labels describe what can happen to packaging after use, but they depend on local systems, not just the material.
Recyclable
- The item can be collected, sorted and reprocessed into new material.
- Plain paper, paperboard and corrugated boxes are widely accepted in curbside programs.
- Plastic films, laminates and mixed materials are often harder to recycle.
Compostable
- The material breaks down into compost within a set time under specified conditions.
- Industrial (commercial) compostable and home compostable are different claims.
- Compostable packaging should not go into recycling, where it can contaminate the stream.
Making claims
In the USA, the FTC Green Guides describe how environmental claims should be qualified and substantiated. In Canada, the Competition Bureau provides guidance on environmental claims under the Competition Act. Check current rules before printing any recyclable or compostable claim, and only claim what you can support.
